When they go they like to play a game where they fantasize about traveling to the place where their oyster hails from and what they would do there for a vacation. If you know me or have read any of my restaurant stories in the past year you may have noticed that I want to become that guy — Mr. Brunch. This Hudson House has a charming outdoor patio, but alas the weather wasn’t on our side that day for dining al fresco. On my quest to become that ideal of a human, I have found a new favorite brunch spot, Hudson House. It boasts two Dallas area restaurant locations — one in Addison and the other in University Park, with a third is poised to open in early 2020 in Lakewood. On a weekday evening at Hudson House Addison, the covered outdoor patio was comfortable and safely spaced out.

First off, I knew this was a cool place given that our server Jill had an amazing haircut, platinum and edgy — and also worked on the side as a DJ. The first full-service restaurant by Hunter Pond, founder of East Hampton Sandwich Co., along with partners Kyle Brooks, Wes Freeman, Hank Keller, and Justin Hollis, is now open on Lovers Lane. My dining companion and I decided to try all six oyster options at Hudson House and all were delicious, but I must say that the blue points were my absolute favorite. I made sure to note when we were leaving that during happy hour (every day from 3 to 6 pm) all oysters are half-price (normally it’s $3.50 per oyster). As I am not a true oyster aficionado I appreciated that each had a description. After experiencing almost half of the menu in one sitting, I get the hype. Keep an eye out for Hudson House’s Greek key and pineapple motifs hidden in antique materials soured from around the world.

Another starter we tried was Hudson’s Avocado Dip with whipped avocado and ranch chips. This incredible chip and dip pairing was hard to stop chomping on throughout our meal. But room had to be saved, especially because the Hudson cheeseburger, Big Brother Lobster Roll, and French Chicken were coming out next.

On July 28, the Hudson House Lakewood dining room will be open at limited capacity and takeout orders. You can also get your frozen peach Bellinis to-go for $6 each. My colleague, the ever-so-chic Lisa Collins Shaddock, shared with me that she and her husband are diehard Hudson House brunch fans.

All were outstanding, but for me, nothing could beat the popular cheeseburger topped with pickles, minced onion, and Hudson sauce. And for dessert, do not miss the Key Lime pie — it’s one of the best things you’ll try. They were light and fluffy, almost as if they were the clouds from my culinary heaven.

All servers and management wore their masks and it truly felt like a mini vacation once the first cocktail came out — a frozen peach Bellini always doles out those beach vibes. We went on to sample many other items that our charming and knowledgeable server recommended. Those included the scallops, steak frites and ahi tuna. All good, but I must point out another item that I will likely return to have again and again — the lemon pancakes. Luckily we were able to get a table away from the crowded part of the restaurant, but we're near the kitchen. I enjoyed the Addison restaurant's ambiance a lot more.

However, there is a lot of flexibility, since these terms are loosely defined. A page, for example, can also mean the screen of a mobile application. An atomic design system puts a lot of focus on the building blocks in any UI/UX project, making sure that the choices made at any point in the design process are thought through. Documentation in the form of a style guide is no doubt helpful, but by itself it’s not enough. It’s essential to provide adequate training and offer ongoing support for your design system’s users to ensure they successfully get up and running with the tool kit and continue to create great work with it. If a relatively scattered, decentralized culture is your reality, don’t be disheartened!

Comprehensive content strategy

Right now, for me the most obvious challenge is to make systematic design the default mode of thinking for designers, agencies, and organizations. I think there’s a tremendous opportunity for design systems to help people build for the future. In addition to demonstrating the final interface as your users will see it, pages are essential for testing the effectiveness of the underlying design system. It is at the page stage that we’re able to take a look at how all those patterns hold up when real content is applied to the design system. If the answer is no, then we can loop back and modify our molecules, organisms, and templates to better address our content’s needs.

Clean separation between structure and content

This chapter introduced the atomic design methodology and demonstrated how atoms, molecules, organisms, templates, and pages all work together to craft thoughtful, deliberate interface design systems. Atomic design allows us to see our UIs broken down to their atomic elements, and also allows us to simultaneously step through how those elements join together to form our final UIs. We learned about the tight bond between content and design, and how atomic design allows us to craft design systems that are tailored to the content that lives inside them. And finally we learned how the language of atomic design gives us a helpful shorthand for discussing modularity with our colleagues, and provides a much needed sense of hierarchy in our design systems.

The idea of atomic design is inspired by the very basics of chemistry. Atoms joining together in various ways to create molecules and compounds, having a set of properties of their own, lies at the heart of atomic design. A design system, based on this strategy, gives equal attention to the individual design elements as well as the system on the whole. Another way to show context is to provide lineage information for each pattern. As we discussed in Chapter 3, a tool like Pattern Lab automatically generates this information, letting you see which patterns make up any given component in addition to showing where each component is employed. Creating full comps requires a lot of effort, which is why we established the design direction first to mitigate the risk of all that full-comp effort going straight into the trash if we got it totally wrong. The waterfall process may make sense for print, architecture, manufacturing, and other physical media since mistakes and changes are extraordinarily costly. We discussed earlier how all matter in the universe can be broken down into a finite set of atomic elements. As it happens, our interfaces can be broken down into a similar finite set of elements. Josh Duck’s Periodic Table of HTML Elements beautifully articulates how all of our websites, apps, intranets, hoobadyboops, and whatevers are all composed of the same HTML elements. In order to apply this methodology in my work, I (along with the help of the great Dave Olsen) created a tool called Pattern Lab to actually create these atomic design systems. I’ll cover Pattern Lab in detail later, but feel free to check it out on Github. We're tasked with making interfaces for more users in more contexts using more browsers on more devices with more screen sizes and more capabilities than ever before.

This UX design framework was presented by Brad Frost in his book titled “Atomic Design”. According to this methodology, when we create design systems, we should think of them as a set of design elements, serving the same function as atoms in a complex compound. These design elements of UI elements join together to create molecules, which then go on to build organisms. UI/UX designers can then use these organisms to create templates for a design system, serving as a standard for all the pages that can be built on these templates. Since joining Salesforce, she’s helped create the ultra-successful Lightning Design System and helps manage their growing design system team. Jina’s story is not an isolated one; almost every guest Anna Debenham and I interviewed on the Styleguides Podcast discussed how helpful their public-facing pattern library was for attracting talent.

Sure, each brand can modify and extend the default look and feel, but after a while customization means fighting the framework’s given structure, style, and functionality. There’s no doubt style guides help teams effectively get things done in the here and now. But much like a fine wine, style guides increase in value over time. The beautiful thing about interface design systems is that they can and should be modified, extended, and refined for years to come. The language of atoms, molecules, and organisms carries with it a helpful hierarchy for us to deliberately construct the components of our design systems. But ultimately we must step into language that is more appropriate for our final output and makes more sense to our clients, bosses, and colleagues. Trying to carry the chemistry analogy too far might confuse your stakeholders and cause them to think you’re a bit crazy.

In addition to look-alike issues, these frameworks can add unnecessary bloat to an experience. It’s fantastic that frameworks provide plenty of prebuilt components and functionality, but a large percentage of designers and developers won’t adopt every aspect of the framework. Unfortunately, users still have to download the framework’s unused CSS and JavaScript, resulting in slower page loads and frustration. Frameworks like Bootstrap allow designers to get ideas off the ground quickly, rapidly create prototypes, and launch sites sooner. And in case designers do get stuck, these frameworks’ communities can provide helpful support and advice. Establishing design atmosphere early is critical to a project’s success, which is why designers have found ways to facilitate these important conversations without having to generate full mockups.

Each individual piece of an interface contains its own unique challenges and opportunities in order for it to look and function beautifully across many screen sizes and environments. Atomic Design discusses the importance of crafting robust design systems, and introduces a methodology for which to create smart, deliberate interface systems. In interfaces, molecules are relatively simple groups of UI elements functioning together as a unit. For example, a form label, search input, and button can join together to create a search form molecule. Molecules give us some building blocks to work with, and we can now combine them together to form organisms. Organisms are groups of molecules joined together to form a relatively complex, distinct section of an interface.

This type of thinking is certainly important, but I’m slightly less interested in these aspects of design because ultimately they are and will always be subjective. Lately I’ve been more interested in what our interfaces are comprised of and how we can construct design systems in a more methodical way. This also requires good project management skills so that everyone knows what is expected of them and when to deliver the results. And the fears about giving away your trade secrets are completely unfounded. It should come as a surprise to no one that people tend to gravitate towards attractive things. A big part of making a style guide a cross-disciplinary resource is ensuring the container that houses your pattern library and other documentation is good-looking, inviting, and easy to navigate. Keeping a pattern library in sync with production environments requires sharing code in a smart, scalable, and maintainable way.
